Stewardship & Conservation at Bemersyde

Bemersyde Estate is more than a place to stay — it’s a living landscape shaped by centuries of care. Today, we continue this tradition through thoughtful conservation, land stewardship, and a deep respect for the natural and cultural heritage of the Scottish Borders. The estate has been managed by the same family for over 850 years and the house is nearly 500 years old.

We invite you to become part of that heritage.

Nature First

We manage the estate in a way that encourages biodiversity and supports native species. Across the woodlands, riversides, and meadows, we prioritise:

• Tree planting and ancient woodland management

• Low-impact mowing to support pollinators and wildflowers

• Protection of hedgerows, veteran trees, and habitats

• Preservation of Bemersyde Moss with its extensive bird life & wildflowers (Link)

Our guests often spot deer, badgers, owls, and migratory birds — especially in quieter corners of the estate or on the lawn before the sun rises.

The River Tweed & Fishing Ethos

The Bemersyde Beat is part of a world-renowned salmon river, and we work closely with local ghillies and river trusts to preserve its health.

• All fishing is catch-and-release

• Riparian zones are carefully maintained

• Riverbank paths are sensitively managed to avoid erosion

Sustainable Estate Life

From energy use to sourcing, our day-to-day operations favour low-impact practices:

• Estate-grown firewood is seasoned and reused

• Garden produce is organic and seasonal

• Guests are encouraged to recycle and compost

• We prioritise local suppliers and tradespeople

Living Heritage

Bemersyde’s story stretches back to 1156 AD — and preserving its character is part of our commitment too.

• The 16th-century house is maintained using traditional materials and techniques where possible

• Outbuildings are mainly used for original purposes

• We support local crafts, historians, and guides who help share the Borders’ unique culture with our guests
